The United Nations (UN) Global Compact is the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative. It considers the organization’s principles and values and is designed to encourage scale up solutions for corporates to address global challenges and promote business-best practices. [1]

In its latest release, the UN Global Compact has launched its Transformational Governance Corporate Toolkit. This handbook has the key objective of guiding companies on how to educate their employees in a way that cultivates transformational governance within their organizational structures.

How does the toolkit further sustainability initiatives?

At its core, the toolkit offers a holistic view of internal governance mechanisms and the strengthening of public governance institutions. By enabling companies to integrate policies that not only serve their interests but also benefit stakeholders and the wider societies in which they operate, it lays the groundwork for more sustainable and impactful business operations.

The provision of a structured framework for corporate governance that includes environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles, the toolkit helps companies in Africa, like Nigeria which its UN Global Compact Network has participated In to develop and align their operations with global sustainability standards. This alignment is essential for attracting investment especially in emerging economies, as investors now are increasingly prioritizing companies with strong ESG performance.

Moreover, the toolkit is designed to promote transparency and accountability within companies, which is particularly important in regions where governance practices may be less developed. For example, the absence of transparency and accountability in Nigeria is a growing problem. Agora a Nigerian think tank in April 2023 published a report revealing how corporate and governmental corruption is the biggest roadblock to the country achieving its development potential. [2]

The UN Global Compact toolkit offers a valuable means of mitigating the continuation of Corporate Governance abuses. It encourages positive actions across governmental and corporate dimensions, promoting effective communication with citizens and employees. By promoting trust among managers, executives, employees, and government officials, the toolkit initiates collaborative partnerships and advocates for good governance practices. This approach is expected to then encourage companies to disclose their ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) performance and engage with stakeholders. Such transparency not only furthers trust with investors, customers, and communities but also serves as an excellent starting point for enhancing corporate accountability and responsibility.

Transformational governance, as advocated by the toolkit, urges businesses to prioritize greater accountability, integrity, and transparency. Positioned as driving forces for responsible business conduct, enhanced Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance, and the fortification of institutions, laws, and systems, this commitment holds the promise of continuing the development of peaceful, just, and inclusive societies.

Sanda Ojiambo, CEO and Executive Director of the UN Global Compact, underlines the significance of this toolkit, stating, “The Transformational Governance Corporate Toolkit is a milestone in our ongoing efforts to equip companies with the tools they need to advance sustainable and responsible business practices. By promoting transformational governance, businesses can play a crucial role in building a more just and inclusive world.” [3]

Aligned with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16—Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, the toolkit underscores its dual relevance to businesses. It not only contributes to progress across the entire SDG agenda but also creates sustainable and profitable environments for business and investment, aligning with global entities and legal frameworks.

Among its notable features and benefits, the toolkit facilitates risk mitigation and long-term viability by providing a strategic roadmap for compliance with transformational governance principles. It also enhances global alignment, positioning businesses to integrate these principles into their corporate endeavors effectively. Moreover, companies demonstrating commitment to transformational governance stand to benefit from increased stakeholder trust, social stability, and improved brand value, thereby attracting investments from socially responsible funds. [4]

Central to the toolkit’s offerings is the user-friendly online Transformational Governance Self-Assessment Tool. This tool provides a structured framework for companies to engage with and apply the principles of transformational governance, enabling them to assess their current governance practices against relevant SDG 16 targets and identify areas for improvement.

Complementing the self-assessment tool are three business briefs included in the toolkit. These briefs delve into key aspects of transformational governance, offering insights on trends and guidance to investors, exploring governmental engagement channels, and providing perspectives on incorporating transformational governance into business strategies.

The development of this toolkit involved collaboration with participating companies and partner organizations through the United Nations Global Compact Think Lab on Transformational Governance. Bringing together 20 companies from 5 regions, this initiative facilitated the shaping of thought leadership on critical issues related to transformational governance, addressing key business challenges, and identifying opportunities for policy advocacy, thereby amplifying the toolkit’s impact through the Global Compact network. [5]

The launch of the Transformational Governance Corporate Toolkit signifies a significant stride towards advancing sustainable and responsible business practices worldwide. By equipping companies with the tools and resources needed to promote transformational governance, the UN Global Compact continues to uphold its commitment to advancing the global collective impact of businesses in delivering the Sustainable Development Goals and creating positive change.

Moreover, the toolkit’s focus on governance not only enhances companies’ ability to address current social and environmental challenges but also positions them to thrive in an environment where ESG disclosure and reporting requirements are transitioning from voluntary to mandatory. Through initiatives like this toolkit, businesses can strengthen their long-term prospects for success, resilience, and sustainability while contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
